Reverse mortgages, which are available from many mortgage lenders, are named as such because rather than making monthly payments to a mortgage lender, as you would with a traditional mortgage, instead, it is the lender that pays the borrower. When the home is either sold or it is otherwise vacated, the borrower then pays back the loan.
