Descripción
In the year 1989, a few days before the start of the Mandalam-Makaravilakku festival (that takes place across the globe every year in the winter months of November and December - which incidentally is the period when devotees voluntarily observe austerities and abstain from cardinal pleasures before undertaking their pilgrimage to the famous Sabarimala Temple on the Western Ghats of Kerala), a few devotees got together and organized a one-day puja including bhajans and annadaanam dedicated to The Almighty, All Merciful Lord Ayyappa in Rohini, then an upcoming sub city of the national capital. A similar Pooja, bhajan and annadanam were performed during the same period next year, and then onwards it became a regular event every year with participation of more and more devotees from Rohini and adjacent areas. Eventually, the idea for setting up of a temple with Lord Ayyappa as the main deity evolved and as a first step, a socio-cultural-religious-philanthropic society named "Sree Dharma Shasta Sewa Samajam, Rohini" was formed in accordance with the Registrar of Societies Act, 1860, with Shree V.R. Soman as its founder president.

Chengannur Shree Sadasivan Achari, the eminent sculptor cast the idol of Lord Ayyappa in panchloha and those of Lord Ganesa and Ma Durga in granite, fully following the traditional customs and norms.
