Choithram Hospital and Research Centre

The Department of General Surgery’s Burn Surgery unit offers holistic care to acute and post burn sequelae patients by a multidisciplinary team. The unit also manages a skin bank from 2011 and has successfully performed 290 cadaver harvests. In addition, the unit builds on Choithram Hospital and Research Centre’s aim by regularly conducting public awareness campaigns for safety with fire.

Skin Bank
The third skin bank in India was started at Choithram Hospital and Research Centre in February, 2001 in collaboration with Euro Skin Bank. Since then 290 cadaver harvests have been possible thanks to the social groups supporting the cause. We have sent banked grafts to centres in Indore and outside; maintaining cold chain skin bank has strict quality control and audit. Cadaver skin is harvested by dermatome and the processing is conducted at the bank. Preservation is performed through glycerolisation.
