Description
Renowned for his sculptural and calligraphy paintings, Ismail Gulgee’s Paintings remain phenomenal in Pakistani Art History.

Trained as an engineer and having degrees from world famous universities like , Columbia University and Harvard, also did not obliged his interest and passion for artistry.

In the 1950s, the young artist also painted the portraits of the Afghan Royal Family. He also came up with an idea of working with mosaic patterns after visiting a marble plant and noticing the remnants of the marble chips scattered across the floor. Working with the marble chips, he also incorporated Lapis Lazuli in his work to give it an eye catching look.

Gulgee later continued to paint famous personalities including US presidents, King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, King of Jordan and Empress of Iran.


Well known for his portraiture, Ismail Gulgee held his first solo exhibition of his imaginary and unrealistic art in Kabul.

Gulgee said, “My work is the manifestation of my inner journey. Through it I connect with the pulse of life. The Calligraphic form and movement that appear are not preplanned or cerebral; they are instinctive and express something deep inside me.”

He was awarded with ‘Pride of Performance’ by the government of Pakistan. As well as honored by ‘Sitar-e-Imtiaz’ for his Memorial work in Faisal Mosque, Islamabad.
